About the Event
In the fall of 2019 the Nordic Lodge held its first Nordic Culture Day. It was very well received by the community and was a successful fundraiser for the Nordic Lodge. With the onset of the covid pandemic and the suspending of any social activity, the event was not repeated in 2020, 2021 or 2022. The Lodge Board decided to revive the celebration in 2023.
The Nordic Folk Fest Committee consisting of Sue Hayworth, Emilly MacCormick, Lori Hansen and chairman Brian Petersen have been working on this event for several months. We looked at what was done in the past and subsequently decided to rename the event and try to make it bigger and better than it was in 2019.
The NORDIC FOLK FEST will occur on Saturday, October 7th from 10 am to 4 pm. We have decided to keep some of what was done in the past including, Scandinavian food preparation demonstrations and cultural demonstrations such as weaving and wood carving. There will also be a Bake Sale to which we hope many of you will contribute various baked
goods. We decided to have a Nordic Cafe and outside entertainment. A part of the entertainment will be a Pickled Herring Eating Contest with a nice prize for the winner. The Cukes, a local ukulele band will appear as well as a children’s Hardanger fiddle group, and Lori Hansen will preform with her accordion. Outside demonstrations will include a Viking
Encampment, a display of Norwegian Fjord Horses, Norwegian Elk hounds, and Forge. This year we are also including a few vendors who will be offering various items for sale.
For the kids there will be a Troll Den with fun activities and outside games. We will also have a face painter to paint on those scary Viking tattoos. Kids can also walk the Troll Trail. There will be an admission charge of $3. You will also be able to purchase a WHIDBEY ISLAND NORDIC LODGE BOOSTER BUTTON for $10. If you purchase a booster button, admission to the Nordic Folk Fest is included in the price.
This is a very big undertaking and the committee has been putting in a real effort to make this happen. We are still in need of some volunteers to help with various aspects of the event. If you can help, even a little, please contact Brian or any of the committee members.
